Pasifika programme ‘Aiga’ supports cultural and emotional needs

Aiga has evolved since the pilot programme began in 2021. We have now reached 6 Secondary Schools and 1 Intermediate School. In the past 12 months alone, we have reached 149 students.

The programme has brought together many Pasifika students from various schools and the environment we have created ensures our youth feel they are supported and in a safe space to be themselves.

We have had inspiring guest speakers, including people such as the CEO of a major company, Olympic medalists, and successful Māori & Pasifika business owners.

Our students have learnt a sa sa together, performed dances representing their island, and shared many dishes unique to their culture.

Our programme has the expertise of a psychologist who focuses on the tools to support our youth in their well-being. In addition to the modules delivered by our psychologist, we also have a life coach who brings years of experience and knowledge to support the emotional wellbeing of our youth.

After each intake, we celebrate our students’ success in the programme with a fia fia night which has brought together their families, teachers, community leaders, and special guests.

Testimonial

In Term 3 and 4 of 2022, 15 of our year 10 students were fortunate to be selected to attend the AIGA programme two afternoons a week. Our boys benefited hugely from the programme, with the focus on personal growth, mental health and leadership, integrated with boxing and sports, while encouraging our boys to embrace their pacific culture. We saw boys take on leadership and grow in maturity, developing healthy relationships and learning from the mentors and leaders provided.

With a key focus being on behaviour and attendance, the AIGA programme compliments our school philosophies and we’re  looking forward to offering the AIGA programme to our year 9 and 10 boys this year.
